DSDN101 - The Clip - Storyboard as standpoint

Technology through gaming has developed an extreme amount in the last decade alone to create more realistic gameplay and graphics. These developments make the game appear life-like and easily relatable, which can manipulate the newer generations’ actions.
Games with realistic appearances such as Grand Theft Auto have been attacked countless times by parents and news reporters, stating that the games contribute to aggressive actions and extreme violence such as 18-year-old Devin Moore’s “cold-blooded shooting spree” (Morales, T 2009). The violence in games contributes and greatly affects the newer generations’ actions.
Grand Theft Auto Screenshot
Furthermore, cheating in games is a frequent occurrence that is seen. The newer generation chooses to take the easy way out by putting in codes that affect the game greatly, making it simple to complete. Such codes, no existing in the real world, affect the choices and outcome of the new generation.
The standpoint taken is to use a new way of seeing the world to create a life in a game that is as real as normal life. But the drawback to this is the gaming world taking over the lives and minds of young generations. By twisting the appearance of basic games, the character can interact with the life and coin bars, changing them however they like by ‘cheating’ and adding aspects that make the game itself unrealistic and falsified.
By removing the factor of violence from the stop-motion, the outcome results in a cheerful game that is a lot more similar to older games such as Mario or Donkey Kong (These games still had a minimal amount of violence. A person would destroy a bomb or a mushroom etc. which removed the realism). Therefore, by having an 8-bit appearance, the stop motion can relate to games older generations played also.

DSDN171: Blog 5 - Locovisual

Underground Tattoo and Arts Studio, on the corner of Vivian Street and Victoria Street, is a multicultural building, mixing Neo-classical style architecture with Modernism, while being influenced by native Maori designs. The columns are painted onto the building rather than architecturally designed into them emphasising the modernist aspects of the building. The columns, similar to the Angular Greek Corinthian style with necking on the Vivian Street face and more basic Doric style on the Victoria Street face has been modified by Maori style designs. Demetri Porphyrios (1987) describes the classical style as "Classicism is not a style, but a tradition that has evolved from and co-existed with the vernacular. It is a living tradition open to adaptation and interpretation, and responsive to region, climate, nature and culture." This explains that any style can influence classicism and force it to adapt similar to how the Maori patterns and designs adapt the style of the Corinthian column.
The Maori patterns replace the Greek design on the columns, personalising it and adapting the Classical designs; traditional styles and patterns are made in the Maori design which links it to the Maori culture in New Zealand. The decoration on the Victoria Street face of the building incorporates a Taniwha; a mythological creature from native historical Maori stories that was believed to be proctective guardians of people or places or a dangerous predator that kidnapped women. This influence from Maori culture creates an effect that is unnatural for a building. The combination of Classicism and Modernism is an unnatural blend; with the inspiration of New Zealand native Maori designs making the building appear a mismatch of designs.

DSDN101: The Clip - Developmental shots

A stage of the pixelation from the GameBoy

DSDN101: The Clip - development shots

Loading screen for the game after the GameBoy pixelates the world. On the GameBoy chip there is subtly written "A New Way of Seeing" which is written here as well. This connects the game that was put into the machine to the loading screen.
This is the basic setting of the game. There are no curves and all the shapes are made form square blocks that makes it appear 8-bit. The flat 2-dimensional appearance makes it appear old and 'retro' while assisting in the side-scrolling theme.
Further to the side, when the view pans to see the world around the character. A orange/red mushroom monster hops around, creating a obstacle for the character to get past. The gap that the character will fall down is shown.

DSDN101: Group Work - Advertisement (Brett Orchard, Luke Eriksen)

Intension of “Iron Curtain” Advertisement
The aim of Iron Curtain in terms of the target audience is to attract males who are in the market for furniture that is made with the sole purpose of being strong and unbreakable.
One of our intentions for the 15 second advertisement is to model the clip on infomercials that display their product and message quickly with an ‘in your face’ type of approach. We believe this is the best strategy to advertise Iron Curtain towards our target audience (males) to get the potential customers excited to come down to their local Iron Curtain retailer and invest in “stylish furniture made tough.” This has been portrayed in our advertisement with the pop up sale signs, the enthusiastic voice over and the “once in a lifetime sale opportunity.”
Iron Curtain not only prides itself on its strength and durability, but also providing its customers with stylish, tasteful and classy designed furniture that would complement any home.

DSDN101: The Clip - Defined brainstorm

This is a detailed brainstorm on the Gaming style, which i chose to base my clip on. It looks deeper into the 8-bit and 2D side scroller style and has precedent images of both, as well as some interesting quotes that detail the gaming industry.

DSDN101: The Clip - Brainstorm

Individual brainstorm researching into Animation Style and Game Style and the aspects that are involved in those styles. The idea of a two dimensional side scroller that has a Mario style theme was the most ideal, using programs to modify the person into a pixelated 8-bit character. This creates a style that is easily interpreted as Media design. The quote, "New way of seeing" is symbolized through the character seeing the world in a two dimensional way.

DSDN111: Developmental drawings for model

Views the precedent images and shows drawings of the modified versions of the precedents.

Creates fluid drawings combining both straight lines and curves that can be edited into a model.

Extra drawings that can be modified into a model.

DSDN171: Curatorial - Blog 4

Growth is a spiral process, doubling back on itself, reassessing and regrouping.”
 Julia Margaret Cameron

Spiral Reconnection creates a fluid flow from basic materials, making the shapes of waves that crash to a single point then spirals around and connect back to a central point. Constructed from a wooden dowel rod, the central point acts as a base for the plastic spiral that flows from three points.
The plastic flows from the fixed positions connect together then spin round to connect back to the central section once again. The spiral that is created in the model is emphasised by the quote by Julia Margaret Cameron Growth is a spiral process, doubling back on itself, reassessing and regrouping.” This explains the spiral process as growth. Like Spiral Reconnection, the spiral doubles back on itself to reconnect to the dowel. Also, Cameron states that for growth, it needs to reassess and regroup. The model regroups again in the middle and reassesses its composition, changing the path of movement.
Fluidity is created through the curves made by a cloudy plastic material. The materials used to create Spiral Reconnection reflect the material used in the precedent images Wire Chair by Bertoia was a strong influence in the overall model. The stand that supports Spiral Reconnection and keeps it upright uses a hook to attach it to the dowel rod. Style and process is reflected in the wire chair. Hooks and bends were used to connect the leg frames to the seat of the chair.

The other precedent that influenced Spiral Reconnection was an unnamed table in the Frankfurt Airport. The precedent table appears to be like a propeller, which has been reflected in model effectively. By having three parts spiralling from the central point, there is influence from the precedent table. The dowel rod was influenced by the wooden  precedent table.

DSDN101: Font study - One Word Film

This font from dafont.com is too comical. There is too much symbolism in each character and the monster is made from the text. This means there is not as much development in the letter M because there is the creature already there. This is an ineffective font that wont be used.

A mildly effective font for the scared letters. The letters are bold but eroded so they don't look complete. None of the letters are even which created a good effect and creates individuality between each letter.

Similar to the font above, the letters don't appear as complete or 'confident' as a completely bold font. It could make the font appear more scared by having the lettters eroded and warped.

Basic bold font. This is an effective style for the beginning of the flash to make it easily readable. The letters could begin to warp from this starting point.

DSDN101: Storyboards - One Word Film

The Monster storyboard shows the development and growth of how a simple character can transform into a monster in a short amount of time. This is shown through the beginning where the letters are all similar sizes and the M begins to grown and change. The font for the M needs to be a basic bold font to make it appear big and menacing while the font for the other letters should start the same size then shrink and warp.
The idea behind the Unpack storyboard was the U represented a bag that all the other letters 'unpacked' from to for the word, before they returned to their origin. A larger serif font could be used for the U to make it seem more important than the rest of the letters, while san-serif could be used for the rest of the letters to show they are the minor attraction of the story.
Storyboard for the word Buzz. I wanted the buzz to be represented by an insect flying around and causing an annoyance. The font for the UZZ is quite static and doesn't move much so a more impressive decorative font could be used, such as a serif font. A san-serif font would be more effective for the bug to make it clearer to understand because the bug moves around a lot and the wings flutter.

DSDN101: Brainstorm - One Word Film

The first brainstorm (left) investigates a series of completely different words and has drawings of how they could be animated into a video. The most playful and animated the words are developed further into the small storyboard to give examples of what could happen if they were developed.

In the minor storyboards (right) shows a short story of what could happen for each different word. The most effective words that have the most interesting story from these are Unpack, Monster and Buzz. These will be developed further into larger storyboards.

DSDN101: Monster - One Word Film

The chosen word was Monster. To create the most effective development for the monster, the M starts as a simple plain like the rest of them. It begins to grow and warp, scaring the rest of the letters. As it grows an eye and teeth the letters shrink in fear. The M then proceeds to terrorize the remaining letters and chase them off the page. By combining letters with the M, the monster develops teeth (a series of N's) and an eye (the letter O). The sound used was both downloaded from soundbible.com and freesound.com and self voice recorded.

DSDN 171: Antiques Hunter - Blog 3

This lipstick holder is an example of a French Rococo revival dated back to the 1930s by the seller on Trade-Me. On oxfordartonline.com the French Rococo revival style was described to be between the 1820 and 1870s, in Europe and predominantly France. This is dated nearly a century before the Trade-Me description.
The description states that it is brass filigree, defined on merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ to be “ornamental work especially of fine wire of gold, silver, or copper applied chiefly to gold and silver surfaces”. The use of gold and silver filigree indicates that there is some resemblance to other Rococo works such as the Table With marble top (Gilt lime-wood, France, cc 1750). Though this example uses a different method and material, the level of ornament and decoration that is shown on the table and the lipstick holder has similarities.
The material used to create the Lipstick holder was brass wire, which was twisted together and then flattened. The immense detail in the filigree that is put into the upper section of the lipstick holder is abstract and does not show the purpose of the item. The holder looks more like a decorative piece by looking like a set of tulips, which would look impressive sitting on a dresser. The emphasis on the Rococo style is shown through the elegant brass appearance, which makes it look nearly gold, similar to the original French Rococo architecture and ornaments. Despite the similarities to the Rococo style, the Lipstick holder is symmetrical which contrasts the asymmetrical style. That could be influenced by the different date that it was made, which built a separation between the two styles.

DSDN 171 - Blog 2: Research Statement and Annotated Bibliography

Altermodernism (Portmanteau word comprised of Alternative and modernism) is a current art movement that is in reaction to commercialism and standardisation.

Single Author Book
Relational Aesthetics by Nicolas Bourriaud looks at the consumerism and commercialism aspect of the altermodern movement. He reveals the principles that structure their thoughts and talks about how their work relates to the Altermodern movement. This could be useful for a more in-depth view into the Altermodern style and principles.

Edited Book
Nicolas Bourriaud collaborated essays and contributions from a group of different art historians, artist and philosophers in his book Altermodern to provide information about the movement. He provides statements such as “Altermodern works are on the cutting edge of contemporary art and thought.” This would be useful for certain background information.

Journal Article
The journal article Altermodernism: Tate Triennial 2009 written by Charlene Lau is an article that informs about the general ideas and styles of Altermodernism. General information such as “Altermodernism attempts to free itself of postmodernism's strangle- hold” (Charlene Lau, 2009) is provided in this article to give an effective background.

Website
The website (Birth of Altermodernism [BOA], 2010) is an online magazine article that questions whether postmodernism (Movement that occurred previously to Altermodernism) is really dead and the world has developed into the new style, Altermodernism. The article gives a fresh perspective on the Altermodernism movement in comparison to recent movements.

Image
The Image Giantbum by Nathaniel Mellors shows a trio of animatronic heads that are connected to frames and have speakers and cables joint to the back of the skull. They provide an example of the historical research subject that helps to identify the style of images that is present in Altermodernism.

DSDN101_Proj1_Hand-in_Individual

The technical drawing style of illustration that is used by Si Scott was my chosen style. My precedent image, Stag by Si Scott is created by hand-drawn illustration, using pencil and pens without the use of technology. This technique has been replicated in my design by using only pen and pencil to create the flowing curves that Scott makes entire images out of. The precedent image is interesting because simple lines and curves come together to make an entire image. Scott creates a pattern out of the curves that flow well together which has been replicated in the earphones cable.
